The company is a division of GMAC Home Services, part of the larger General Motors Acceptance Corporation, which provides automotive financing for General Motors, as well as other financial products worldwide.

GMAC Real Estate was founded in 1998, when GMAC bought the "Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate" brand from Meredith Corporation.
